On 23rd of November, we had our first national workshop on SLCPs reduction from the Municipal solid waste in the Philippines.Mr. Albert , Chief of Climate Change Division from DENR , Mr. Eligio t. Ildefonos, Executive Director Secretariat NSWMC, and Chief of Solid Waste Management from DENR, Marissa N. Mercado, Solid Waste Management from DENR, Mr. Alan Silayan from Clean Air Asia, Mr. Virender Kumar Duggal from ADB Philippines, Ms. Grace Sapuay, President of Solid Waste Management Association of the Philippines (SWAPP), and representatives from cities/province (Cebu, San Carlos, South Cotabato, Municipality of Solano, Municipality of Virac, Municipality of Maragusan) were some of the key speakers in the workshop. During the workshop, IGES Centre Collaborating with UNEP on Environmental Technologies (CCET) highlighted SLCPs, its source, impact, and importance of addressing SLCPs reduction issue at the national level.
The workshop was very informative and helped in creating awareness of climate and waste nexus, and the extent and effectiveness of the present waste management system and SLCPs emissions to the atmosphere, identify constraints and areas for improvement to meet the desired level of performance and identify and discuss the gaps in the current waste management system.It also helped in reviewing the current national waste management policies, future strategies and plans to reduce SLCPs from MSW in the Philippines based on NDGs and SDGs commitment by the Philippines.
