CCET has been supporting the development of the waste management strategy at municipality level called JAKSTRADA in one of the top priority tourism destination in the country, Lake Toba. The 6 regencies out of 7 surrounding Lake Toba have completed and submitted their JAKSTRADA to Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK), and the remaining regency also has competed and is going to submit it to KLHK.
At the meeting on Feb 28th, the regencies shared the status of waste management in the Toba area and the gap to achieve the Jakstarada targets, also their experiences and difficulties for making Jakstrada.
2. Handover ceremony of the Recycle Center (Feb 29, 2020)
A recycling center has been constructed in Toba Samosir regency with the support of CCET, and its inauguration ceremony was held during the national public awareness campaign called “National Waste Awareness Day 2020”on Feb 29th with the participation of the vice minister of KHLK, the mayor of Tobasa regency, etc.
This recycling center has waste collection scheme same as regular municipality waste collection as public service, but also has a waste bank at the center to collect and treat valuable plastic waste. These plastic will be recycled or recovered by several flows/techniques depending on its material types. For example, the facility is equipped with pyrolysis treatment to produce oil from plastic waste.
The facility has unique concept of “no rejection of waste”. It accepts not only organic and inorganic waste, but also any kinds of plastic and even hazardous waste, because if rejected, those rejected waste would end up in open dumping. Even hazardous waste will be stored temporally at the mini landfill at the facility. This kind of model is 1st in Indonesia.
CCET will keep assisting and monitoring the operation of the pilot project facility during the next phase of activities.
