Launch of Tool for Estimating Climate Impact from the Waste Sector in China

31-Jan-22

The IGES Centre Collaborating with UNEP on Environmental Technologies (CCET) has launched version III of its IGES-GHG calculator entitled “Estimation Tool for Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions from Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) Management in a Life Cycle Perspective”. The tool has been specifically developed in partnership with the Rock Environment and Energy Institute (REEI), to quantify lifecycle greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from waste management systems in China.

Designed on a simple spreadsheet, this tool was first developed in 2011 as a prototype to facilitate local governments’ science-based decision-making for climate mitigation as well as quantitative evaluation on their progress. After several modifications, the latest version of the tool has been designed for the Chinese context and translated into the Chinese language. The accompanying user manual provides stepwise guidance on how to enter data and obtain results. The tool is expected to be used by local governments and support agencies such as local NGOs and all relevant stakeholders in China, in order to enhance the country’s 14th Five-Year Plan (FYP) (2021-2025) and its new climate pledge to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060. The tool and accompanying manual are also available in English.
