IGES is supporting the project called “Closing the Loop: Scaling up Innovation to Tackle Marine Plastic Pollution in ASEAN Cities” in partnership with UNESCAP.
Its inception meeting was held to introduce the selected four cities to each other.

From Thailand, Nakhon Si Thammarat City Municipality has been selected as one of the four pilot ASEAN cities, the following is the news from the city.

Asst.Prof.Chaowawat Saenpong, Mayor of Nakhon Si Thammarat City Municipality, assigned Deputy Mayor, Mr. Sawai Khiewchan to participate in the Virtual City to City Inception Meeting of all local governments in four Asian cities: Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; Surabaya, Indonesia; Da Nang, Vietnam and Nakhon Si Thammarat, Thailand under Closing the Loop Project. The meeting aimed at introducing the city team to each other, and share information about the project, and learn more about each of the cities.
For Thailand, Nakhon Si Thammarat City Municipality has been selected as one of the four pilot ASEAN cities under a project titled “Closing the Loop: Scaling up Innovation to Tackle Marine Plastic Pollution in ASEAN Cities” initiated by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) in partnership with the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES) with financial support from the Government of Japan. The project will strengthen the capacity of cities to improve plastic waste management and reduce plastic pollution into the ocean by making municipal plastic waste management processes more circular. The project aligns with the local implementation of the ASEAN Framework of Action on Marine Debris, the Roadmap for Plastic and Waste Management 2018-2030 from the Royal Government of Thailand and supports the implementation of Sustainable Development Goals 11, 12 and 14.
