National Training workshop on Plastic Waste Management in Sri Lanka

The Ministry of Environment, Sri Lanka has developed the National Action Plan on Plastic Waste Management (NAPPWM) 2021-2030 with the technical assistance of IGES Centre Collaborating with UNEP on Environmental Technologies (CCET), United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) International Environmental Technology Centre (IETC) with financial support from the Ministry of Environment, Japan (MOEJ). As part of its local application and adaptation, the Ministry of Environment, Sri Lanka is planning to organize the “National Training on Plastic Waste Management” in partnership with CCET, UNEP-IETC, and MOEJ where HELP-O is assisting with overall coordination for organizing the training workshop.

Objectives: The objectives of the training workshop are as follows:

1) To officially launch and disseminate the National Action Plan on Plastic Waste Management for Sri Lanka

2) To introduce a tool for measuring the plastic pollution in cities

3) To introduce methods for monitoring the plastic leakage to the environment using a digital application

4) To share some good case studies on Plastic waste management in Sri Lanka and abroad

 

Target audience: This training targets a mixed audience; however, the majority will be administrators, engineers, technical officers, public health inspectors, and environmental officers from Provincial/Local Authorities. In addition, we expect participants from key stakeholder institutions such Ministry of Environment, National Solid Waste Support Center and Waste Management Authority - Western Province, etc. The training session aims to have four sessions: Introduction, Plastic Waste Measurement, Hotspots and Monitoring, Development of City Action Plans, and Discussions on Key Policies and Regulations in Plastic Waste Management.

National Training workshop is a two-day event, which will be organized on 25th and 26th August. The training workshop consists of four sessions (two sessions on each day) where the duration of each session will be about 90 minutes. The participants successfully responding to the “Quiz at end of each session” will be awarded an internationally valid Certificate of Competency, jointly by the MoE and CCET-IGES.

Outcomes: The Inaugural Training Workshop on the NPWMAP for SL will lead to the below outcomes;

  • Presence of informed National, Sub-national, and Local Authority level officials, Funding Agencies, and Private sector agencies on the NPWMAP-SL with Methods and Tools for its effective implementation
  • Developed access by the audience to the modern Methods and Tools in effective PW management 
  • Availability of trained officials at LAs, who will be recognized as resource persons for future sessions
