This guideline was prepared by the IGES Centre Collaborating with UNEP on Environmental Technologies (CCET) under the project titled “Sustainable Solutions of Compost from Organic Waste in Iraq” in consultation with the policy makers and experts in Karbala City. 

The guideline aims to provide some insights on how to design and implement an awarenessraising programme aimed at introducing organic waste reduction and source separation in cities as a fundamental step. The ideas, methods and techniques presented can also be used to strengthen the capacities of national and local policymakers through the practice of ‘trainer of trainers’ (ToT) in designing official source separation practices to promote the waste reduction and resource recovery of materials and achieve sustainable development.
