Marketplace of ideas

Climate and Clean Air Conference 2025

The second day of the CCAC Conference 2025 was dedicated to the Marketplace of Ideas, an exciting new initiative designed to showcase 24 innovative projects tackling super pollutants across various high-impact sectors. These sectors included agriculture, cooling, fossil fuels, heavy-duty vehicles and engines, household energy, waste, and clean air. The Marketplace offered a dynamic platform for organizations to present their CCAC-funded projects through videos, materials, and interactive discussions, fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange among global participants.

Among the standout presentations was the “Transformative Action to End Open Burning of Waste” project, represented by Ms. Miho Hayashi from IGES (see page 62-63 of the digital catalogue). She provided an in-depth overview of the project’s findings and recommendations through visually engaging posters, informative videos, and presentation slides. Ms. Hayashi addressed the pressing issue of open waste burning, highlighting its detrimental effects on the environment, climate, and public health.

The project booth attracted significant attention with its compelling visuals, including posters illustrating global waste burning statistics, black carbon emissions, and the causes and impacts of open burning. A monitor played short videos depicting the harsh realities of waste burning at dumpsites and roadsides, reinforcing how these practices endanger nature, climate stability, and human health.

Throughout the day, approximately 30 attendees, primarily from NGOs and government agencies worldwide, visited the booth. Some visitors sought detailed data on waste burning and emissions, while others were eager to explore potential solutions. Ms. Hayashi emphasized that solutions must be tailored to the diverse causes of open waste burning, which range from cultural and habitual practices to social, technical, operational, financial, institutional, and political factors. She also outlined ongoing pilot activities in Asia, Africa, and Latin America, explaining how lessons learned will contribute to a comprehensive regional roadmap— the project’s final deliverable.

Engaging with participants from different countries reinforced the urgent need to eliminate open waste burning, particularly in Africa, where weak regulations and lack of control at dumping sites exacerbate the problem. The Marketplace of Ideas also served as a networking hub, bringing together stakeholders interested in solutions such as biochar production, black soldier fly technology, and biomass digestion facilities. Ms. Hayashi recognized the power of connecting demand with supply, reinforcing the idea that collaborative innovation can drive impactful solutions.
