On 12 November 2025, the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) officially launched its Methane Reduction Roadmap 2026–2035 alongside its enhanced NDC 3.0 at COP30 in Belém, Brazil. The launch was presided over by Pohnpei Governor Stevenson A. Joseph, underscoring the nation’s strong commitment to tackling climate change and short-lived climate pollutants.
IGES supported the Department of Environment, Climate Change and Emergency Management (DECEM) in developing the Methane Reduction Roadmap, providing technical analysis and strategic guidance to help chart a clear pathway for methane mitigation across key sectors.
Priority actions outlined in the Roadmap:
- Strengthening landfill management to reduce uncontrolled methane emissions.
- Expanding organic waste composting to divert biodegradable waste from disposal sites.
- Promoting waste reduction and circular economy solutions to cut methane at source.
- Scaling decentralized wastewater treatment systems that can capture and utilize methane for energy or heat generation.
Together, these actions position FSM as a regional leader in methane mitigation and support its long-term vision for climate resilience and sustainable development.
