Workshop on Finalization of Waste Management Strategy and Action Plan (WMSAP) 2020-2030 in Negombo City, Sri Lanka

CCET has been supporting Negombo Municipal Council (NMC) in Sri Lanka with the development of a Waste Management Strategy and Action Plan (WMSAP) 2020-2030. The WMSAP for Negombo provides guidance and a long-term vision to Negombo City for its efforts towards transforming from conventional waste management practices to more sustainable waste management practices.

CCET has organized a series of consultative meetings and workshops with coordination of NMC and FSLGA (local partner) to draft the city strategy. The draft strategy was presented to the technical committee comprising of relevant ministries, institutions, and organizations and selected NMC staff. After receiving the feedback from the technical committee members, the draft strategy was revised.

Marking the completion of the draft strategy, in expectation of acquiring final feedback on the draft WMSAP from different stakeholders from relevant ministries, institutions, organizations, private sectors, schools, and community, etc., the final workshop was organized on January 24, 2020, at Hotel Jetwing Blue in Negombo. In addition, during the workshop, a pilot project to establish a Resource Recovery Center (RRC) as a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model in Negombo was also launched by signing a letter among all the partners (NMC, CCET, Janathakshan and RNA Plastic Recycling). Establishment of RRC in Negombo was one of the activities identified under the draft strategy and CCET is assisting NMC to implement that activity as a pilot project in partnership with Janathakshan, an NGO working on environmental issues and RNA plastic recycling, a private plastic recycling company operating their business in Negombo.

CCET will revise the draft WMSAP based on comments from the workshop participants and the final WMSAP will be shared with the city by April 2020.
