Second Sub-Regional workshop on Preparation of Status Report and Sub-regional Road map for Implementing the Global Waste Management Goals toward Addressing SDGs in South Asia was jointly organized by CCET, SACEP, Government of Bangladesh, UNEP, and the Ministry of Environment, Japan on 15-17 July in Dhaka, Bangladesh. The workshop was inaugurated by Dr. Abas Basir, Director General of SACEP and Kazunobu Onogawa, Director of CCET, with the presence of special guests, Mr. Md. Shahab Uddin, Honorable Minister, Mrs. Habibun Nahar, MP, Honorable Deputy Minister, Mr. Abdullah Mohsin Chowdhury, Secretary, and Dr. S. M Munzurul Hannan Khan, Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Government of Bangladesh.

The workshop was organized as a sequel to the preceding workshop organized in March 2019 in Kathmandu, Nepal, and was aimed at forging consensus on thematic issues towards development sub-regional roadmap, while inviting country inputs to the draft report on the state of waste management in South Asia Sub-region. Six thematic sessions were organized during the first two days, including organic waste management, management of plastic waste and marine plastic pollution, financing and institutional building, waste separation at source, elimination of open dumping and open burning, and holistic waste management and integration of 3Rs. Each session was initiated by a keynote presentation, and followed by country presentations to allow for in-depth discussion from sub-regional perspective while capturing diverse and unique national interests and concerns. At the final session, policy directions emerged in each sessions were re-discussed, re-confirmed and refined into a draft outline of the sub-regional roadmap. The outline is expected to be further developed into a draft roadmap for further discussion.

On the third day, a technical visit to Narayanganj Compost Plant (Panchaboti, Narayanganj) was conducted as an example of organic waste management through public-private-community partnership.
