The International Forum for Sustainable Asia and the Pacific 2019 (ISAP2019) was held on 30-31 July 2019 with the aim of sharing information and facilitating diverse discussions on sustainable development in Asia and the Pacific. Taking this opportunity, CCET organized two sessions during ISAP2019 focusing on biogas technology as a solution to advance organic waste management.

Training Workshop on Development of City Waste Management Strategy in Negombo City, Sri Lanka

IGES-CCET has been supporting the Negombo Municipal Council (NMC) in Sri Lanka for developing waste management strategy in Negombo city. IGES-CCET and NMC co-organized a training workshop on 19-20 July 2019 in Negombo city. The workshop successfully convened Negombo city officials including Mayor, commissioner, PHI’s and hotel association members, green community members, fishery community members, Negombo fish market management committee representatives, NGOs etc. along with few neighboring cities namely Katana and Seeduwa.

Second Sub-Regional workshop on Preparation of Status Report and Sub-regional Road map for Implementing the Global Waste Management Goals toward Addressing SDGs in South Asia was jointly organized by CCET, SACEP, Government of Bangladesh, UNEP, and the Ministry of Environment, Japan on 15-17 July in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Training Workshop to develop waste management strategy and action plan in Lake Toba region

CCET supported Ministry of Environment and Forestry, Indonesia to organize the workshop to develop provincial and local level waste management strategy and action plan in Lake Toba region on 25 June 2019, inviting North Sumatra provincial government, Medan city and Lake Toba municipalities. As stipulated in the national level waste management strategy, each local government has to submit their own waste management strategy to the government.

A Capacity Development Workshop on Composting in Battambang: An Approach to Environmental Education in Primary Schools in Cambodia

BACKGROUND

The economic development and lifestyle changes are resulting in equally rapid rise in municipal solid waste, and the amount of MSW disposed to Battambang final disposal site has steadily increased from 21,535 tons in 2014 to 62,050 tons in 2017, while the methane gas generated from landfill sites across Cambodia (four cities - Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, Battambang, Kampong Cham) is estimated to be as high as 360,000 tonnes CO2 equivalent per year, contributing to global climate change.

Ministry of Environment (ME), Maldives and CCET jointly organized a Training Workshop for the Saafuraajje Pilot Projects on 19 March 2019, inviting the members of Island Councils and NGOs of five islands selected for pilot project implementation. First Sub-Regional workshop on Preparation of Status Report and Sub-regional Road map for implementing the Global Waste Management Goals toward Addressing SDGs in South Asia was held on 25-26 March in Kathmandu, Nepal. The meeting was jointly organized by CCET, SACEP, Government of Nepal, ICIMOD, UNEP, and the Ministry of Environment, Japan. The workshop was inaugurated by His Excellency Shakti Bahadur Basnet, Minister of Forests and Environment, Government of Nepal, Director General of SACEP, and Director of CCET.
